I had the privilege of meeting JP through my husband Andrew, while we were living in the UK. It was great to get to know the European market up close and personal. JP is a keeper in my network. He is just absolutely wonderful, incredibly smart, funny, thoughtful and creative. He believes in the past, present and future of games and he sees all three and the overlapping lessons to be learned. I’m honored to call such a powerful, humble man my friend.
MM: If you didn't go into games, what would you be doing? JP: Industrial product design or video production.
MM: Who has influenced your work? JP: Shigeru Miyamoto, the guys from Valve, through Ken Birdwells article on Cabal and through their games, of course. The makers of Advance War, and Eboy.
MM: Do you consider yourself a geek? JP: Nope, I'm way too socially abled ;-)
MM: What's your claim to fame? JP: Produced the first Wii game in the Netherlands (My horse and me) while building a studio (Wgames). Supervised two students projects -- de Blob and Papercakes at the HKU school of the Arts -- which went on to be finalists at IGF student category. de Blob went on to become a THW Wii game and I helped smooth the deal.
MM: What is your most treasured possession? JP: The key to my home.
MM: If you were a zombie who is the first person you would eat? JP: Hmmm, Elvis Presley, so he can rest in peace!
MM: What technology or media is going to be important in five years? JP: Low entry game development tools for the consumer.
MM: When and where were you happiest? JP: When my students' startup game companies succeed in business (Soepel, Ronimo, Flavour, Fourcelabs).
MM: What does the future hold? JP: More success and visibility for the Dutch Game Industry.
MM: What is your superpower? JP: Connecting people.
