Laura RamseyPersonal branding helps potential employers, investors, business partners and consumers learn who you are and what you do. It is your first and most important tool of self promotion. Make it easy on yourself and make your name your brand. Use your name for your website, (myname.com), your email address, your social network profiles, and attach it to everything you do online.

Your website is where most people get their first impression, and if you give them a website that is your name, that is one more way of helping them remember you and your product. If you already have a website and it isn’t your name, or your name isn’t available, put your name all over your site. You want to be easy to identify so that you are easily set apart! And as Sheri Rubin mentioned in her article about being l33t, resist the temptation for clever profile names. More names just mean less consistency, and ultimately make you harder to remember for who you really are.

There are tools on the Internet now that help you establish your name across all the social networks you could ever want to use. This way, down the road you don't run into a place where your name already exists and it is someone else, or someone else’s business. Sites such as claim.io or knowem.com allow you to claim your name on hundreds of social media sites. This little tool has a dual purpose - as it claims your name and sets up your profile on the different sites, it increases your search engine optimization because each of these points back to your personal website. Talk about getting your name out there!

I know there is a temptation to be creative and catchy, especially in our industry, but in the long run the best way to get name recognition is to make your business your name, your work your vision and who you are.
